Albert N. Pettengill (1837-1903) from Ilion, NY applied for and was granted patent #361,890 on April 26th, 1887 for his "Improvements in Reels for Fishing Rods". His invention, primarily formed from a disk of sheet brass and drawn up to form a rim or band, featured a perforated cylinder that formed the spool. Found with various markings, these reels thus far are always found in one of four "size" markings, from a #1 to a #4.

Edw. vom Hofe, 454, 3-0, Celebrated Black Bass multiplying reel designed for minnow casting, Pat. '83, this is the earlier 454 version w/o GS rims on the plates, with thumb brake, sliding oil cap and balanced handle.  The 464 has GS bound rims.

Heddon hired William Carter and Jack Welch to develop a line of reels to compete with the Meek reels. In 1917, they introduced their first Carter-built reels. They were the No's 30, 35, 40 and 45. They were available for only a couple of years.  The top of the line variations were the full jeweled tournament (FJT) models with sapphire jeweled bearings.  All of these reels are considered highly collectable.
